WHITMAN IN CHICAGO MONDAY TO DISCUSS WATER NEEDS AND AIR PARTNERSHIPS

Office of Media Relations, 202-564-4355

On Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, EPA Administrator Christie Whitman will be in Chicago, Ill., for a number of events. Whitman will start with an address at the Water Environment Federation’s 75th Annual Conference and Exposition. Whitman will discuss the agency’s perspective of the nation’s water infrastructure needs and things the Administration is doing to improve water quality. Whitman will also visit El Milagro Inc., a Chicago manufacturer of tortilla products, on Sept. 30, to see the company’s green fleet of low-polluting delivery vehicles. The family-owned business converted 24 of its 32 trucks to propane to reduce air pollution and save the company money. Finally, Whitman will be the keynote speaker at an event highlighting the six month anniversary of EPA’s Climate Leaders program. Climate Leaders is a voluntary partnership between companies and EPA to develop industry-wide greenhouse gas emission inventories and set reduction goals. Administrator Whitman will describe the progress of the Climate Leaders program, recognize new Partners and applaud the new reduction goals set by Climate Leaders Partners.
