(Denver, Colo. - Feb. 16, 2006) Pauline Gervais, transportation director for Adams Twelve Five Star Schools, was awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Achievement Award yesterday. The award was presented by Carol Campbell, Deputy Assistant Regional Administrator for the Office of Partnerships and Regulatory Assistance in EPA's Denver office.

Gervais received the award for her ongoing commitment to implementing clean diesel practices in her school district, as well as proactively promoting cleaner school buses and cleaner fuels to other school districts statewide.

Adams County District 12's retrofit/clean fuel project included installing pollution-controlling diesel oxidation catalysts on their fleet of 67 school buses and switching to use of biodiesel, a cleaner burning diesel fuel. These improvements have resulted in reduction of particulate matter by 20 percent, hydrocarbons by 50 percent, carbon monoxide by 40 percent and are pioneering the way in the use of a sustainable and renewable energy source.

"Retrofits and clean fuels offer clear benefits for regional air quality and provide cleaner environments for children as they travel to and from school," said Campbell. "The Adams County District 12 project would not have been as successful without Pauline's leadership and significant personal contribution to EPA's National Clean Diesel Campaign."

EPA Region 8 presents awards in four categories to individuals and groups external to the regional office. This award recognizes significant achievements in protection of public health or the environment, or in advancing the Agency’s current strategic goals. Among the criteria is an outstanding contribution to environmental protection through a single action, or by an ongoing action over an appreciable period of time.
