OHIO MAN INDICTED FOR DUMPING ASBESTOS

Dennis Anderson of Cleveland, Ohio, was indicted on Feb. 12, by a federal grand jury in U.S. District Court in Cleveland, Ohio, on one felony count of unlawfully disposing of asbestos in violation of the federal Clean Air Act. Anderson owned the McGuffy school which he was converting into an apartment building. He allegedly hired a number of individuals to remove asbestos insulation from the school, and disposed of the waste asbestos-containing material at an abandoned house in a low-income community. If inhaled, asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer and a lung disease known as asbestosis. If convicted, Anderson faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration and the Cleveland Air Pollution Control Authority.
