EPA awards three Colorado small businesses $350,000 in innovation research contracts

(Denver, Colo. - Feb. 28, 2007) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a total of $350,000 in Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts to three small companies in Colorado.

The companies receiving $70,000 innovation research contracts are:

ADA Technologies, Inc., Littleton, for field test kits for rapid detection of hazardous contaminants on indoor surfaces in EPA’s SBIR focus area, “Homeland Security.” ADA will develop portable field kits to rapidly collect and identify biological and chemical hazards on indoor surfaces. The kits would provide high accuracy and have a long shelf life.

Eltron Research, Inc., Boulder, for synthetic gasoline from biomass in EPA’s SBIR focus area, “Engine and Vehicle Emissions Reduction, New Non-Ethanol and Non-Biodiesel Liquid Biofuels.” Researchers will develop a new fuel derived from biomass that works in gasoline engines.

Eltron Research, Inc., Boulder, for the removal of sulfur from gasified coal at or above 800C in EPA’s SBIR focus area, “Control of Air Pollution.” Researchers will develop a method to remove sulfur, which is potentially hazardous to human health, from coal that has been gasified.

TDA Research, Inc., Wheat Ridge, for a low-cost biodiesel production process using meat rendering wastes, recycled greases and unrefined vegetable oil feedstocks in EPA’s SBIR focus area, “B3 Agriculture and Rural Community Improvement.” Researchers will develop, test, and evaluate a new, low-cost process for producing biodiesel from vegetable oils and animal fats.

TDA Research, Inc., Wheat Ridge, for a hot fuel-gas sorbent system in EPA’s SBIR focus area “Control of Air Pollution.” Researchers will develop a low-cost, high-capacity sorbent that can remove CO2, a greenhouse gas, from coal at high temperatures.

These are Phase I or "proof of concept" awards. There will be a total of 36 such contracts awarded by EPA nationwide.
