EPA LAUNCHES CARE GRANT PROGRAM TO HELP COMMUNITIES

EPA is launching a new grant program and asking communities to apply. The Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) is a new and unique community-based, community-driven, multimedia demonstration program. The grants will help communities understand and reduce the risk of exposure to toxic chemicals.

EPA is offering financial and technical assistance through CARE to help communities understand and reduce risks caused by toxics from multiple sources.

The program will award $1.65 million through two levels of funding. Level 1 offers communities about $75,000 to establish collaborative partnerships and set priorities for reducing toxic risks in their environments. Level 2 offers about $300,000 to communities that already have a broad-based collaborative partnership, have identified priorities, and are ready to implement risk-reduction strategies.

CARE will finance 10 projects nationally in fiscal 2005. Applications are due by May 20.

EPA’s competition policy specifies that questions about the grants must be answered through the Agency’s CARE Web site.

The Request for Initial Proposal, an application, and more information about CARE are all available on line at www.epa.gov/CARE.
