KANSAS CATTLEMAN PLEADS GUILTY
TO ANIMAL WASTE DISCHARGE
Norbert Hornung, who operates the Hornung Cattle Company in Offerle, Kan., pled guilty on Feb.12 to violating the Clean Water Act. During the month of May 2000, the defendant violated his EPA permit by discharging animal waste from a lagoon at his feedlot, knowing that the animal waste would enter into Coon Creek. The release of animal wastes into surface waters can make them unfit for drinking and recreational uses and can harm fish and aquatic life. When sentenced, Hornung faces a maximum sentence of up to three years in prison and/or a maximum fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas City.
