(ATLANTA – August 1, 2007) The EPA Superfund removal action at the Gulf States Steel Site in Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama began this week. The removal action at the site is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize the site and remove any hazards it may pose to human health and the environment.

The Gulf States Steel Site is located in Gadsden in an industrial park. The company was a fully integrated steel manufacturing facility that manufactured a diversified product line including steel plates, hot and cold rolled steel sheets, and galvanized steel sheets. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1999. A site assessment and site evaluation were conducted at the site in 2007. As a result of the investigations, EPA determined that a time-critical removal action is necessary.
