U.S. EPA AWARDS ASU SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GRANT

     (San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has awarded Arizona State University's College of Architecture and Environmental Design $70,886 as part of the agency's Sustainable Development Challenge Grant Program.

     The grant will be used in Scottsdale and Phoenix to develop plans and guidelines for sustainable neighborhoods.  The neighborhood designs will incorporate environmentally-friendly construction techniques, materials, and designs to preserve sensitive habitat, minimize use of water, energy, and other resources, and provide opportunities for economic development while ensuring a high quality of life for residents.

     Partners in the project include Arizona State University, developers and planners from the cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona State Lands Dept., Arizona Public Service Co., BRW Co., Swabach and Associates, and Design Workshop.  Community and business groups and other stakeholders will also be involved in the project through focus groups and public forums.

     The Phoenix and Scottsdale sites will total about 300 acres. The Phoenix site is  located in central Phoenix and is state-owned.  The Scottsdale site is a privately-owned site in a mostly undisturbed desert area of north Scottsdale.

     The Sustainable Development Challenge Grant Program is part of President Clinton's Reinventing Environmental Regulation Initiative, which was launched in 1995.  The grant program is designed to encourage community-based projects that recognize and build the connection between environmental quality and economic prosperity and to build partnerships to increase a community's long-term capacity to protect the environment.
