EPA Provides Grants to Help the Public in the U.S. Virgin Islands Learn More about Air and Water Pollution in their Community

(New York, N.Y.) The United States EPA is providing a $25,000 "citizen science" grant to the St. Croix Environmental Association Vehicle Air Pollution Project. The Project will train at least 30 St. Croix high school and university students and 3 teachers to review vehicle air pollution information, collect and analyze vehicular traffic and air pollution data, and develop recommendations based on their research. Project participants will then present their findings in town hall meetings throughout St. Croix.

“People care deeply about clean air and clean water in their own communities,” said EPA Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck. “This funding will help inform local residents about the environmental conditions in their own backyards.”

Citizen science enlists the public in collecting a wide range of environmental data and is an important tool for expanding scientific knowledge and literacy.
