Raymark Waste to be Removed at Sikorsky Airport A Public Information Meeting: October 28, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall

EPA jointly with the CT Department of Transportation will hold public informational meeting to discuss the Sikorsky Airport Runway Safety Area/Route 113 realignment project on October 28, 2014 from 4:00-7:00pm at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall: 1300 Stratford Road. As part of the Sikorsky Airport Improvements Project, the City of Bridgeport will be conducting a removal of hazardous waste at a parcel associated with the new runway safety area. The work, which will be overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, includes the excavation, treatment, and disposal of approximately 14,000 cubic yards of hazardous material associated with the Raymark Industries Superfund Site.

The Sikorsky Airport Improvements Project includes multiple construction efforts. The project includes the realignment of approximately 2200 linear feet of Connecticut Route 113 (Main Street) to accommodate the construction of a runway safety area, approximately 500 feet in width and 300 feet in length at the east end of runway 6-24. Also included in the project is the removal of the Raymark waste and the mitigation of invasive plant species at various locations along Connecticut Route 113 and within the Sikorsky Airport limits.

The partial relocation of Connecticut Route 113 will impact the portion of the Airport Property that contains the Raymark waste. Workers have mobilized to the site to begin the initial preparations that will result in the removal of Raymark waste and the road realignment later this Fall. Heavy construction equipment will be used to excavate soil and other material. A staging area will be set up to store and stabilize material; and trucking will be arranged for disposing material to appropriate out-of-state waste disposal facilities. Clean fill will be brought in; and once the Raymark waste is removed and clean fill is placed, relocation of Main Street can be completed and construction of the Runway Safety Area can proceed.

EPA and representatives from the Stratford Health Department, City of Bridgeport, CT Department of Transportation, CT Department of Public Health and CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will be available to the public on October 28 at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall to answer questions and discuss the project and schedule.
