EPA HOLDS PUBLIC INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON DRAFT SOIL SCREENING GUIDANCE

EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) will hold a public informational meeting Dec. 1, 1994, to discuss the draft soil screening guidance. The meeting will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. (EST) in the Maryland Suite A/B of the Sheraton Washington Hotel, 2660 Woodley Road at Connecticut Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. The draft guidance provides an approach for developing soil screening levels which are expected to assist site managers in quickly identifying contaminated soil of potential concern and in screening out from further consideration those soils that do not warrant additional study. The draft guidance contains soil screening levels for 107 Superfund soil contaminants. Efforts to develop such a guidance are part of Superfund's Administrative Improvements initiative. The draft guidance has been developed for application on a pilot basis for remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) work at select Superfund National Priorities List sites only. The guidance will have many applications for Superfund and other federal, state and local organizations. A notice will be published shortly in the Federal Register announcing the availability and request for comment on the draft soil screening guidance. A concurrent, independent, scientific peer review of the draft guidance is also planned.
