EPA PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.
EPA, in cooperation with the Federal Interagency Task Force, provided the city of St. Petersburg, Fla. with $500,000 in funding assistance. President Clinton, at the request of St. Petersburg Mayor David Fischer, formed a Federal Interagency Task Force on St. Petersburg to address socio-economic problems, which were identified as issues related to the two civil disturbances in October and November 1996. The Task Force is composed of eight federal agencies: EPA, the Departments of Housing and Urban Development, Commerce, Education, Health and Human Services, Justice, Labor and the Small Business Administration. The goal of the Task Force is to aid and empower citizens of St. Petersburg to participate in the economic growth and development of their community. EPA provided the city with $100,000 to assess brownfield sites, a $200,000 cooperative agreement to plan future uses of brownfields properties and to match future uses with businesses to redevelop the sites. Another $200,000 grant will be used to work with St. Petersburg Junior College, in partnership with the Pinellas County Public Schools, to provide environmental job training for 100 residents of south St. Petersburg over a two-year period.
