Request for Comment on the US-Mexico Border 2020 Program Framework

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requesting comments from interested parties and stakeholders on the draft “Border 2020: U.S.-Mexico Environmental Program” framework. The eight-year, bi-national, results-oriented, program for environmental improvement has been developed by EPA and SEMARNAT, 26 U.S. border Tribes, indigenous communities of Mexico and environmental agencies from each of the ten Border States.

The mission of Border 2020 is “to protect the environment and public health in the U.S.-Mexico border region, consistent with the principles of sustainable development”. As the home to over 14 million people and one of the busiest cross-border trade regions in the world, protecting human health and the environment in the Border Region is essential to ensuring that the U.S. continues to be safe, healthy and economically productive.

The draft framework, “Border 2020: U.S.-Mexico Environmental Program”, is posted in English and Spanish on EPA’s Border web page. Border 2020 is the latest multi-year, bi-national planning effort to be implemented under the La Paz Agreement, which is a bi-national environmental agreement and succeeds the current bi-national program Border 2012. The La Paz Agreement was signed by Presidents De la Madrid and Reagan in 1983. The new program, Border 2020 will feature new foundational principles, incorporate a focus on chemical safety, and the use of Action plans in order to prioritize and complete targets.
