California Manufacturer Sentenced for Clean Air Act Violation

(12/11/03) Owens-Brockway Glass Container Inc., an Oakland, Calif., glass container manufacturing business, pled guilty on Dec. 5 to violating the Clean Air Act for failing to provide required notification to the EPA or to the Bay Area Quality Management District (BAQMD), a regional air pollution agency, prior to demolishing two furnace exhaust stacks in 1999. The company was sentenced to pay a $48,000 fine and $50,000 restitution to the BAQMD. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the BAQMD. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco.
