EPA begins long-term study at Dayton Superfund Site; Meeting Oct. 8, 6:30 p.m.

(Chicago, Ill. - Oct. 2, 2008) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 will host a meeting to update residents on new developments at the Behr-Dayton Thermal Systems VOC Plume Superfund site Wednesday, Oct. 8, 6:30 p.m. at Kiser School's cafeteria, 1401 Leo St., in Dayton, Ohio.

EPA and partner Ohio EPA involvement at the site is now shifting from short-term control measures to developing a long-term remedy for the site. The first step in the remedy will be a new study involving comprehensive sampling of soil, ground water and air in the area near the site. In early September, EPA proposed adding Behr-Dayton to its Superfund National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites. Sites on the list are eligible for further investigation and cleanup. A public comment period on the proposal ends Nov. 3.

In 2003 and 2006, trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination was detected in ground water beneath the Behr-Dayton auto parts manufacturing facility at 1600 Webster St. To address potential health risks associated with the pollution, EPA has installed vapor mitigation systems in 148 homes in the neighborhood south of the plant since late 2006. (Chrysler has also installed systems at 48 properties south of the site.)
