Baltimore Fuel Company to Pay $12,500 Penalty for Underground Storage Tank Violations

BALTIMORE – The Rittenhouse Fuel Co. of Baltimore will pay a $12,500 penalty to settle alleged violations of environmental regulations to prevent fuel leaks from underground storage tanks.

The company’s facility at 1759 East Joppa Road includes two 25,000-gallon underground fuel tanks and one 4,000-gallon underground gasoline tank. The company failed to conduct required leak detection procedures on the piping for these tanks.

Leaking underground tanks are a major source of soil and groundwater contamination throughout the United States, with the tremendous volume of gasoline, oil and other petroleum products stored in these tanks. Federal and state regulations are in place to reduce the risk of leaks and the cost of major cleanups.

The company neither admitted nor denied liability for the alleged violations, but certified that it is now in compliance with underground tank regulations.
