Boston - EPA New England will host a public meeting to discuss cleanup goals and next steps for the HoltraChem facility in Orrington, Maine.

              When: Thursday, June 20, 2002

              Time: 6:30 PM

              Where: Center Drive School
              17 School Street
              Orrington, Maine

EPA is working with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and TycoHealthcare/Mallinckrodt Inc. to investigate and cleanup mercury pollution and other contaminants at the HoltraChem plant. The first step in determining a cleanup is the establishment of risk-based cleanup targets for each contaminant for each media – soil, surface water, groundwater, sediment and air. This is called the Preliminary Media Protection Standards (PMPS). From these, potential cleanup options can be considered with the objective of selecting the best combination of treatment, containment, and exposure controls to prevent people from coming in contact with a harmful substance.
EPA and Maine DEP are seeking public comment on the Preliminary Media Protection Standards. Copies of the site investigation results and reports that support the proposed PMPS are available for review at the Orrington Public Library located at 15 School Street. A
30-day public comment period is open from June 20, 2002 to July 19, 2002. Written comments on the proposal should be submitted to:
