NELSON CONFIRMED AS EPA’S CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER

The U. S. Senate has confirmed Kimberly Terese Nelson as EPA Assistant Administrator for Environmental Information. President Bush nominated Nelson on Sept. 21. She will be the Agency’s Chief Information Officer with responsibility for management of information technology operations, its security and reliability, and information collection, analysis and dissemination, including the annual Toxics Release Inventory.
“Kim Nelson brings to EPA invaluable experience in government information technology management and in environmental issues,” said Administrator Christie Whitman. “She will provide the Agency with expert leadership in assuring that information is gathered and disseminated to the American people in the best possible manner.”
Nelson’s previous positions were in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, most recently as Executive Deputy Secretary and, prior to that, as Chief Information Officer.
To assure that citizens understand environmental and public health conditions in their communities, EPA works with the states, tribes, industry and organizations to assure that data are reliable and easily accessible. In addition, Nelson will coordinate with other federal chief information officers to realize the full potential of electronic accessibility of information throughout government.
Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
