(Kansas City, Kan., March 18, 2011) - EPA is recognizing the City of Dubuque, Iowa, with the 2010 Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund Award for Sustainable Public Health Protection.

The City of Dubuque is in the midst of an innovative water meter replacement project which will allow its water customers to identify water waste and consider corrective measures. This project will translate into “smarter” water use and increased energy savings. More efficient water use will also reduce the use of both energy and chemicals the city must use to treat and deliver water.

Dubuque is replacing approximately 22,500 water meters with new meters which will greatly increase metering accuracy and feature automated meter reading abilities. This new system will create an annual savings of more than $144,000 through the elimination of manual monthly meter reads.

The Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund Awards for Sustainable Public Health Protection recognize the most innovative and effective programs.
