EPA to Co-Host Kansas City Workshops on Lead Poisoning

(Kansas City, Kan., August 4, 2006) – Kansas City will be the focus of Train-the-Trainer Workshops on lead poisoning issues. The workshops will be hosted by the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The elimination of childhood lead poisoning by 2010 is a national priority for EPA. EPA Region 7 has identified Jackson County as a strategic priority as the county with the second highest rate of childhood lead poisoning in Missouri.
The latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that only 13 percent of children under six in Jackson County have been tested for lead poisoning and there were 244 confirmed cases (2003 data).
Lead exposure can cause reduced IQ, learning disabilities, developmental delays, reduced height, poor hearing, and a host of other health problems in young children.
Peeling lead paint is the most common source of lead exposure to children in the U.S. About 75 percent of the nation’s housing built before 1978 contains lead-based paint.
Residents of Kansas City, Mo., and others interested in learning more about the dangers of lead are encouraged to attend the following workshops:
