Livestock management benefits cited

Denver -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 8’s administrator, Robert E. Roberts, is presenting a Friend of EPA Award at South Dakota State University, Agriculture Engineering Building, Brookings at 3:30 p.m. today, March 9.

Roberts will present the achievement award to six individuals of the South Dakota State University Cooperative Extension Service for coordinating the environmental training for the South Dakota Livestock Producers program. The training assists South Dakota livestock producers with the regulatory learning curve to help them understand and comply with new water pollution control permits. Thanks in large part to this well-received training program, there have been no noncompliant discharges of wastewater from a manure containment system of a permitted Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation in South Dakota.

"These are individuals who have made a difference on behalf of the environment," said Roberts, "helping ensure South Dakota’s water remains clean and protected , while enabling livestock producers to conduct their operations in a manner that benefits the economy and the environment."

Receiving the Friend of EPA Award are: Professor Jim Gerwing Dr. Dick Nicolai, and Dr. Bob Thaler, South Dakota State University, Brookings; Jeffrey Hemenway, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Huron; Jeanie Votava, S.D. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Pierre; and Dr. Julie Walker, SDSU Cooperative Extension Service, Fort Pierre.

EPA Region 8 presents awards in four categories to individuals and groups. This award recognizes efforts that lead to significant benefits to EPA Region 8, serves to champion human health or environmental protection, or voluntarily addresses or is highly responsive to an EPA need.
