(5/23/08) U.S. EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson will lead the U.S. delegation to the G8 Environment Ministers Meeting in Kobe, Japan, May 24-26. The participants will discuss climate change, biodiversity, and the "3R Initiative" (reducing waste and reusing and recycling resources and products).

The Group of Eight (G8) is an international forum for the governments of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States to discuss issues of common concern. Though the group's origins date back to the early 1970s, it did not become the Group of Eight until 1997 when Russia formally joined.

Among other attendees at the Kobe meeting are representatives of the European Commission, China, India, Brazil and South Africa.
