EPA DEVELOPS RESOURCES TO HELP PROTECT CHILDREN

EPA has developed four educational resources to help protect children from being poisoned by pesticides and household products. They were made available in keeping with National Poison Prevention Week, March 18-24. Communities are encouraged to raise awareness of the dangers of unintentional poisonings and the means of prevention. The materials are available in printed and by interactive web sites. “Learn About Chemicals Around Your House” is available at: www.epa.gov/oppt/kids/hometour. It provides children and parents basic information about ordinary household products, that may contain harmful chemicals, including pesticides, ways to safely use and store them, and precautions to take if an accident occurs. “Read the Label First! Protect Your Kids” is a new brochure which provides similar information. It demonstrates the benefits of reading label instructions and precautions, keeping products in their original containers, and storing products out of the reach of children. Another publication, “Ten Tips to Protect Children from Pesticide and Lead Poisonings Around the Home”, is available in Spanish and English. “Pesticides and Child Safety” is a fact sheet that provides current household pesticide-related poisonings/exposure statistics from the American Association of Poison Control Centers, recommendations for preventing poisonings and first aid guidelines.
