American homeowners are getting a simple Internet tool (www.energystar.gov ,click on “Check out the new Home Improvement toolbox!”) from EPA that provides the five most cost-effective, energy-efficient improvements they can use in home repair, renovation and remodeling projects. The Energy Star Home Improvement Tool calculates energy consumption and suggests upgrades ranging from the purchase of equipment labeled Energy Star to actions that would seal and insulate ducts, reducing leakage and improving efficiency. The average U.S. household pays energy bills of $1,400 a year, but families choosing Energy Star energy efficiency solutions could cut these costs up to 30 percent, approximately $420 annually, and help protect the environment. Power plants burn coal, oil and other fuels that produce air pollution, posing health risks and contributing to global warming; the less energy used in homes contributes to cleaner air breathed by the public.
