(10/04/06 - San Francisco) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued orders to two Lyon County businesses regarding their industrial wastewater discharges to the sewer system in Dayton, Nev.

Under the orders, Bruce Industries and Medallic Art Co. will monitor wastewater discharges for cyanide, metals and oil and grease and make any treatment modifications necessary to comply with federal discharge limits.

The requirements will remain in effect until Lyon County adopts a local sewer use ordinance and can issue its own sewer discharge permits. The EPA has advised the county on development of its sewer use ordinance, which is intended to protect its wastewater treatment plant from unanticipated pollution loading.

“We are working with these two companies to ensure their wastewater discharges meet federal requirements, and protect both the sewage treatment plant and water quality,” said Alexis Strauss, director of the EPA’s Water Division for the Pacific Southwest region. “We are pleased with the level of cooperation by the companies with local and state agencies, as well as the EPA, in resolving this matter.”

In July, Lyon County officials along with officials from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection participated with the EPA in inspecting several Lyon County businesses for compliance with federal wastewater pretreatment requirements.

The EPA’s industrial pretreatment program has established industrial discharge limits designed to protect municipal treatment plants and the nation’s waterways from the impacts of industrial wastewater.
