EPA ANNOUNCES PUBLIC HEARINGS ON SMOG AND PARTICULATE PROPOSAL

EPA today announced public hearings in Boston, Mass.; Chicago, Ill.; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Durham, N.C., on Jan. 14 and 15, 1997, to hear testimony on the Agency's recent proposals to strengthen air quality standards for ground-level ozone (smog) and particulates (soot). Any citizen may testify. Hearings on the proposals will be held at the Westin Copley Place,10 Huntington Ave., in Boston (617- 262-9600); the Midland Hotel, 172 West Adams at LaSalle in Chicago (312-332-1200); and the Red Lion Hotel, 255 South West Temple St., in Salt Lake City (801-328-2000). A special hearing on the technical aspects of the particulate matter (PM) monitoring proposal (reference method, air quality surveillance, and designation of reference and equivalent methods for monitoring PM 2.5) will take place at the Omni Durham Hotel, 201 Foster St., in Durham (919-683-6664). The Boston, Chicago and Salt Lake City hearings will begin (local time) from 10:30 a.m - 8 p.m. on Jan. 14, and from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Jan. 15. The Durham hearings will be held on Jan. 14 only, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.  Individuals planning to make oral presentations at the hearings should notify Ms. Linda Metcalf, MD-15, Air Quality Strategies and Standards Division, Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, U.S. EPA, Research Triangle Park, N.C. 27711, phone 919-541-2865, at least seven days prior to the date of the hearings. Oral presentations will be limited to five minutes each. A verbatim transcript of the hearings will be available for inspection and copying from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. weekdays at the Office of Air and Radiation Docket and Information Center at EPA Waterside Mall Headquarters, Room M-1500, 401 M St. S.W., Washington, D.C., phone 202-260-7548.
