Outstanding Achievements in Water Quality Recognized in Kansas and Missouri

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Oct. 20, 2008) - EPA has announced that water facilities in Kansas and Missouri are among the recipients of the 2008 National Clean Water Act Recognition Awards, presented Oct. 20 at the Water Environment Federations Technical Exposition and Conference in Chicago, Ill.

The municipal wastewater treatment facility in Lawrence, Kan., was selected as the first place winner and the Spencer Creek wastewater treatment plant in St. Peters, Mo., was the second place winner in the exemplary biosolids (sludge) management awards category.

EPA Region 7 Administrator John Askew said, "EPA is proud to recognize these facilities for outstanding and creative management in biosolids practices."

This is the 23rd year for the awards, which are designed to encourage public support of programs aimed at protecting the public's health and safety and the nation's water quality. The awards are intended to increase overall awareness for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, wet weather flow control measures, management of solid residues, the health and safety of municipal employees, and the reuse and recycling of biosolids.

EPA oversees the protection of water quality and public health, and the Agency is working with community leaders and the public to meet the growing needs and demands of limited water resources.
