PHILADELPHIA – The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $873,000 grant to the City of Alexandria, Va. to help pay for repairs to the sewage system that serves the Four Mile Run Sewer Service Area.

“These upgrades will help alleviate problems with sewage overflows to homes, businesses, yards and streets, and provide Alexandria a healthier environment and better quality of life,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The sewer remediation will include internal repair to about 10 miles of sanitary sewers and 800 manholes. Repairs to the sewers will be accomplished by joint grouting, internal lining, and point repairs by excavation and replacement. Manhole remediation will include internal repairs and adjustment of frames and covers to prevent surface water inflow.

The grant will provide partial funding for the project that is estimated to cost $6.1 million.. The balance of the project will be paid for with state and local funds.
