17 COMPANIES RECOGNIZED FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY
AND GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION MEASURES

On Nov. 17, Climate Wise Partner Achievement Awards will be presented to 17 manufacturers for their success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy efficiency. Climate Wise is an EPA program designed to stimulate the voluntary reduction by manufacturing companies of greenhouse gas emissions. Partner companies develop comprehensive plans with energy efficiency and pollution prevention goals, planned actions to accomplish these goals and estimates of the impacts. There are over 460 Climate Wise Partner companies, representing over 12 percent of U.S. industrial energy use. Their programs will help reduce CO2 emissions by 18 million metric tons by the year 2000, a level equal to the emissions of four million cars. The savings is expected to be $193 million. The award winners ranged from small facilities, with less than 100 employees, to large multi-facility corporations. Overall Achievement Awards were given to companies that excelled in leadership, innovation, action planning and energy use reductions. The winners were Anheuser-Busch, Baxter Healthcare Corp. (North Cove facility), British Petroleum, Cargill Inc. (Raleigh, N.C. facility), Cosmair Inc., General Motors, Gillette (Arrow Park facility), Johnson & Johnson, Malden Mills Industries, Motorola (Austin facility), Pan American Hospital, Quad Graphics Inc., Stoneyfield Farm Yogurt Inc., and Teco-Westinghouse Motor Co. Three companies received Special Recognition Awards for achievements in individual projects: Boeing Co. Interface Inc., and Lucent Technologies.
