David Deegan 202-564-7839 / Deegan.Dave@epa.gov

In order to promote adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) programs in schools and day care centers, EPA is awarding grants to Purdue University and to Texas A&M University that will establish regional Technical Resource Centers for IPM. The goal of this cooperative program is to reduce exposure of infants and children to potentially harmful pests and pesticides. IPM refers to an effective, economical and environmentally sensitive approach to pest control that relies on a combination of common-sense practices to manage pest problems, minimizing exposure of pesticides to people, property, and the environment. The Technical Resource Centers funded by these EPA grants will provide a variety of resources to develop IPM programs in schools and day care centers across nine states. Purdue will support Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, while Texas A&M will support Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Resources will include a toll-free hotline, training programs, educational and technical materials available on the Internet, a variety of informational publications, program support, and access to an extensive network of existing IPM knowledge and expertise.
