Delaware gets $6.5 million EPA grant for water quality improvement projects

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $6.5 million grant to reduce water pollution in Delaware.

The EPA grant, which was matched with $1.3 million from the state, supports the state’s Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund that provides low-interest loans for the construction of wastewater treatment facilities, non-point source and estuary projects, and other water quality management activities.

“This grant provides funding to support projects that are vital to protect and improve water quality in Delaware’s bays, rivers, lakes and streams for drinking water, recreation and natural habitat,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

Projects for wastewater treatment facilities include planning, design and construction of new facilities and improvements to existing treatment plants, sewers and collection lines. Nonpoint source and estuary projects include septic tank rehabilitation and construction of structures and equipment used for animal waste storage, and other agricultural best management practices.

EPA has previously awarded $94, 210,580 over the past 12 years to Delaware for the fund. As recipients repay their loans, the funds are available for new projects in Delaware.
