EPA ANNOUNCES GRANTS TO CREATE "JOBS THROUGH RECYCLING"

Across the United States, more individuals, organizations, businesses and governments are collecting materials for recycling than ever before. Curbside recycling programs have increased 500 percent over the past five years to over 6,600 programs nationwide. To support the growth of recycling businesses and to stimulate job creation, EPA launched its "Jobs Through Recycling Initiative" in 1994 and awarded $2.6 million to selected state and tribal governments for their recycling business development efforts. In 1995, $1.5 million will be made available on a competitive basis to support state and tribal government efforts to foster recycling and reuse businesses. Multi-state and multi-tribal organizations are also eligible to compete for the grants. Two to three recycling/ reuse business assistance projects in the $100,000 to $250,000 range and eight to 10 recycling/reuse business assistance projects of up to $100,000 will be funded. The goal in selecting the proposals is to stimulate recycling and reuse businesses that use recyclable or reusable materials and contribute to economic growth and job creation/retention. Proposals that focus on areas with a demonstrated absence of local and regional markets and that contri-bute to economic development and jobs creation/retention will be given priority. Nonfederal matching funds of at least 25 percent are required for proposed projects. Solicitation notices have been sent out to state and tribal governments. The application deadline is Jan. 24, 1995, with funding to be awarded in March 1995. For a copy of the solicitation notice contact, Tim Jones of EPA's Office of Solid Waste at 202-260-7920.
