Construction Contract Issued for Stauffer Chemical Site in Tarpon Springs

(TARPON SPRINGS, FL – February 10, 2010) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Stauffer Management Company (SMC) officials announced today the selection of the remediation team for the Stauffer Chemical Site on Anclote Road in Tarpon Springs.

O’Brien & Gere has been selected as Stauffer’s construction manager for the remediation project. O’Brien & Gere is an employee-owned engineering and project delivery company based in Syracuse, New York. The firm was founded in 1945 and has more than 850 scientists, engineers and construction and operation personnel located in 30 offices throughout the U.S.

Envirocon, based in Missoula, Montana, has been selected to perform the construction of the project. The firm provides full-service environmental remediation, demolition, geotechnical and water-related services to public and private sector clients throughout the U.S.

Cleanup is estimated to take eighteen months, which includes: the consolidation and capping of contaminated soils in the north and south parcels of the site; installation of a cut off wall to reduce movement of groundwater contamination at the site; and restoration of the eastern shore of Meyers Cove. The project schedule is currently being refined and once completed will be announced to the community.

The remedy design has been approved by EPA. The design was given to local and state officials and summarized in a fact sheet mailed to the community in November 2008. EPA has been notified and supports the Stauffer team selection.

EPA has retained Black & Veatch Special Projects Corp. to assist with construction oversight.

EPA will host an open house prior to cleanup to discuss the project schedule and what to expect during construction. Representatives of the remediation team will be available. Advance notice will be provided to the community once the date and location of the meeting are finalized.
