EPA To Join Congressman Robert Menendez and Mayor Vas in Perth Amboy, New Jersey For National Brownfields Pilot Project Award

(#97151) NEW YORK, N.Y. -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials will join Representative Robert Menendez and state officials at the former Du Pont facility (at the corner of High Street and Buckingham Avenue) in Perth Amboy to present Mayor Joseph Vas a grant check under EPA's national Brownfields Pilot Program. The property, where EPA is conducting a Superfund Removal action to eliminate heavy metal and chemical hazards, is a potential Brownfields pilot project site. The government officials will meet at the site at noon on Monday, November 11.

The goal of the Brownfields Pilot Program is the renewal of industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. The City of Perth Amboy will use the money for site assessments and assessment related activities.

There are more than 125 municipalities now participating in the National Brownfields Pilot Program, including five cities, in addition to Perth Amboy, in New Jersey -- Camden, Newark, Elizabeth, Trenton and Jersey City.

Directions: From North via NJ Turnpike take Exit 11...through toll plaza...follow signs for Route 9 South. Route 9 will be the second exit to the right. Once on Route 9 follow signs for Smith Street/Perth Amboy. Follow Smith Street through central business district to High Street. Make left turn at light onto High Street. Continue on High Street for approximately five blocks. The site will be on your left on the corner of High Street and Buckingham Avenue.
