EPA HOLDS OPEN MEETING TO DISCUSS NEW APPROACHES
TO ECOLOGICAL RISK ASSESSMENTS FROM PESTICIDES

EPA is holding a one-day meeting on June 23 to discuss current initiatives by the Agency to incorporate probabilistic approaches (use of probability distribution to account for uncertainty in assessing risks) to ecological risk assessment from exposure to pesticides. The development of probabilistic ecological risk assessment tools and methodologies was suggested to the Agency in l996 by the Scientific Advisory Panel which meets regularly to peer review major EPA pesticide decisions. The meeting is open to the public and will held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Va., beginning with registration from 8 a.m. - 9:20 a.m., and concluding at 4:30 p.m. EPA is expecting audience participation from academia, public interest groups and industry. Non-EPA speakers include: Robert Graney, Director of Environmental Research at Bayer Corp.; Wenanah Hauter, Environmental Director of Citizen Action; and, Isabel Johnson, Director of Applied Sciences and Research, Golder Associates Inc. On June 24-25, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., the Ecological Committee on Risk Assessment Methods under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act will follow up with technical working sessions on terrestrial and aquatic areas of ecological risks. Background papers regarding discussion topics will be available after June l3, at the following address: EPA, Rm. 1128, Crystal Mall #2, l921 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington,Va., telephone - 703-305-5805.
