PROPOSALS PROMOTE INTEGRATED
PEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs is soliciting grant proposals that will help reduce the risks associated with pesticide use in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings in the United States. The grants are available through the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program's (PESP) Regional Initiative Grant Program. PESP is a voluntary partnership program between EPA and pesticide users that encourages and promotes risk reduction. Projects that address PESP's risk reduction goals, pollution prevention, integrated pest management (IPM) or research methods for documenting trends that influence the adoption of IPM and other methods that reduce risks associated with pesticide use will be considered. Other projects also may be considered if they complement these goals. Over the past three years the PESP program has funded over $150,000 for research through 40 projects aimed at reducing risks associated with pesticide use. These projects have included a wide range of activities on the use of reduced-risk chemicals for controlling pests, the effectiveness of low risk chemical alternatives and the development of IPM programs in schools. The grant program will be administered by EPA's regional offices. In order to be considered for funding during the FY 99 award cycle, all applications must be received by the appropriate EPA regional office on or before May 3, 1999. EPA will make its award decisions by June 2, 1999. Details are available in the March 19 Federal Register, and on the Internet at: http://www.pesp.org.
