PENNSYLVANIA MAN CHARGED WITH VIOLATING CLEAN WATER ACT

On Nov. 1, Mark Mayhue of Annville, Pa., former superintendent of the Norristown Wastewater Treatment Plant in Norristown, Pa., was charged with one misdemeanor violation and two felony counts of violating the Clean Water Act. Mayhue is accused of failing to remove sewage sludge from wastewater discharged from the Norristown Plant into the Schuylkill River in violation of the plant's discharge permit. If convicted, Mayhue could receive a maximum of up to seven years imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of up to $125,000 per day of violation. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Environmental Crimes Section with the assistance of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and with assistance from EPA's National Enforcement Investigations Center.
