EPA update meeting on Dayton vapor investigation Nov. 15, 6 p.m.

CHICAGO (Nov. 5, 2007) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 will host a public meeting to update residents on its plan for additional testing in the basements of homes near the Behr-Dayton paint facility in Dayton, Ohio. The meeting will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, at Kiser School Cafeteria, 1401 Leo St.. Representatives from Ohio Department of Health will also attend the meeting.

Prior EPA tests have shown that ground water near the plant at 1600 Webster St. is contaminated with TCE (trichloroethene), an industrial cleaning solvent. The chemical produces vapors that are seeping into some basements in the area. EPA has already identified several homes that will get vapor-abatement systems installed this winter. The agency now seeks access from property owners in the McCook Field neighborhood, south of VanCleve School, to test additional basements. There will be no charge to residents for the testing or, if necessary, installation of the vapor-abatement systems.
