NEVADA MAN CHARGED WITH CLEAN WATER ACT VIOLATIONS
John Moran of Las Vegas, Nev., was charged on May 21, in U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada in Las Vegas with one count of violating the Clean Water Act and two counts of making false statements regarding the illegal discharge of plating wastes into municipal sewers. Moran was an employee of Silver State Plating (SSP) in Las Vegas from July 1996 to July 1997. SSP is a metal plating and polishing firm which has been in operation since 1989. Plating solutions from the SSP facility were allegedly discharged into the Clark County Sanitation District sewers through the use of a bypass pipe. If convicted on all charges, Moran faces a maximum sentence of up to 13 years in prison and/or fines of up to $750,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center.
