MASSACHUSETTS MAN CHARGED WITH CLEAN WATER ACT VIOLATION

Joseph C. Gangi of North Andover, Mass., was charged on July 14, with violating the Clean Water Act by tampering with water monitoring equipment. Gangi was the General Manager and Vice President of Operations for Fruit Salad Inc., in Lawrence, Mass. Prior to August 1996, Fruit Salad operated a fresh fruit processing facility which discharged wastewater into the sewers operated by the Greater Lawrence Sanitary District. The company was required to provide wastewater samples so that its sewer fees and surcharges could be calculated. Gangi allegedly tampered with the monitoring equipment to reduce sewer usage fees. If convicted, Gangi could face up to two years in prison and/or a fine up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, Mass.
