Arctic Surplus Superfund site Cleanup Completed

(Fairbanks, AK – Sep. 26, 2006) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that the cleanup at the Arctic Surplus Superfund site, located on Badger Road, six miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, has been completed and the site has been deleted from the National Priorities List (NPL) of contaminated sites.

On July 27, 2006, EPA published in the Federal Register a notice of intent to delete the Arctic Surplus Superfund site from the NPL.

The cleanup of the site included:

• Removal of 140 cubic yards of PCB contaminated oil, eight drums of low-level radioactive material, 75 gallons of the pesticide chlordane and 22,200 pounds of asbestos;
• 2,000 truck loads of scrap materials taken to a metal recycler;
• Disposal of more than 385 transformers, 195 gas cylinders and 3,000 drums with various waste; and
• Capping of the landfill and covering it with asphalt.

Long-term monitoring of the wells will make sure the site remains safe. It is restricted to commercial and industrial use to make sure people do not come into contact with any low-level contamination.

The Arctic Surplus site is a 25-acre former salvage yard used for everything from military equipment to asbestos insulation and several different kinds of oils. Extensive PCB and lead contamination resulted from having cracked batteries and burned transformers to recover metals. Piles of asbestos and transformers leaking PCBs littered the site. Soil and groundwater were contaminated with industrial solvents and lead. The site was added to the National Priorities List of contaminated sites in 1990.
