Town of Belmont to Pay Fine for Oil Spill at Elementary School

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reached a settlement with the Town of Belmont, Mass., stemming from an enforcement complaint regarding a 2,500 gallon oil spill last year at Burbank Elementary School. Under the settlement, Belmont will pay a fine of $8,000.

The oil spill occurred on Dec. 12, 2003, when approximately 2,500 gallons of No. 4 heating oil were discharged following the rupture of a return line to the underground storage tank. The oil flowed through the facility's drainage system, into a storm drain and ultimately to Clay Pit Pond.

EPA's investigation and review has concluded that the town responded quickly and effectively to the spill, minimizing the environmental impacts of the oil contamination.
