BROWNER RECOGNIZES 32 ORGANIZATIONS FOR
ENERGY EFFICIENCY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
For their voluntary leadership in reducing energy use and preventing pollution in common-sense, cost-effective ways, Panasonic, Sears, Whirlpool and 29 other organizations will receive Energy Star Partner of the Year Awards from EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner at a banquet in Washington, D.C. tonight.
The eighth annual awards, now sponsored by EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy, will recognize the energy efficiency investments made by these Energy Star Partners that improved their profitability and contributed to a cleaner environment. Winners are selected based upon their ability to utilize energy-efficient technologies, communicate energy efficiency benefits to consumers and business, and recruit others to join the Energy Star program.
“The Clinton/Gore Administration believes that a strong economy and a healthy environment go hand-in-hand,” Browner said. “Products with the Energy Star label save consumers and businesses billions of dollars each year while reducing millions of tons of harmful pollutants. By voluntarily working to save energy and reduce pollution, the recipients of the awards are leading America to a cleaner future through energy efficiency.”
The EPA ENERGY STAR Program identifies the most energy-efficient products, homes and buildings. This makes it easy for businesses and consumers to choose equipment and initiate building upgrades that save money and reduce the need for energy and power generation – thereby cutting air and global warming pollution. To date, Energy Star Programs have prevented the annual release of more than 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. The energy reductions from these products have saved U.S. consumers and businesses more than nine billion in energy costs since 1992. Simply by using Energy Star products the average household can save $400 per year.
The 32 winners will receive awards in five categories. They are:
