Local Residents Complete EPA Training for Job Opportunities at the Savannah River Site

(ATLANTA – July 14, 2009) The Savannah River Site (SRS) Superfund Job Training Initiative (SRS-SJTI), sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy (DOE), and SRS, has successfully completed its initial phase in providing 20 local candidates with training for job opportunities at SRS. The SRS-SJTI was initiated in December 2008.

The participants successfully completed all training requirements and participated in a graduation ceremony on Monday, July 6, 2009. Job interviews were held that week and the first installment of the SRS-SJTI new hires were selected on July 9, 2009.

The Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) created 20 jobs, 10 for material handlers and 10 for operators. The candidates from the Aiken County area were selected based on leadership and team-building skills. Project summaries for SRS-SJTI are scheduled for the SRS Citizen's Advisory Board on July 27 and 28, 2009 in North Augusta, South Carolina.

SRS-SJTI is funded by EPA’s Technical Assistance Services for Communities (TASC) Program, an initiative aimed at providing unbiased educational and technical assistance to communities affected by hazardous waste sites around the country. Since the program’s inception, SJTI has trained over 300 individuals from underserved groups in the surrounding community for entry-level positions at Superfund sites across the United States.
