ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMINAL FUGITIVE APPREHENDED IN ALASKA
On Oct. 2, Steven K. Leslie was apprehended without incident by EPA Special Agents and Alaska State Troopers in a remote location a few hundred miles outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. Leslie had been indicted on Sept. 9 in the U.S. District of Idaho in Boise on three counts of illegally disposing of hazardous waste and three counts of damaging government property. Leslie’s indictment arose from the discovery in early 1995 of two hazardous waste dump sites on Forest Service land and one site on property managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Ten or more drums containing cyanide and chromic acid plating solutions were found at each of the three sites. Sometime between 1993 and early 1995, Leslie allegedly disposed of the drums at the three locations in northern Idaho. This case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division.
