SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT MARKS 25th ANNIVERSARY

On Dec. 16, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the federal law ensuring the quality of America’s drinking water, will mark its 25th anniversary. The United States enjoys some of the safest drinking water in the world due to a strong regulatory and enforcement program implemented through partnerships formed by many public and private groups including EPA, states, tribes, local governments, water suppliers, public interest groups and the general public. Representatives of these groups will help observe the 25th anniversary by holding a Futures Forum on Dec. 16 to discuss how the nation might address future challenges in providing drinking water over the next 25 years. Issues to be addressed include drinking water costs, innovative drinking water treatment technologies, sources of drinking water, small water systems, public information and involvement, and drinking water research. At the forum, speakers will present their vision and goals for the future, with time for audience participation. Additional information on the Futures Forum is available on EPA’s drinking water web site at: https://www.epa.gov/safewater. The forum will be followed by a dinner, with remarks by EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner and others. Awards will be presented to seven drinking water "Heroes." The Futures Forum (starting at 1 p.m.) and the dinner (starting at 6 p.m.) will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Washington, D.C., 300 New Jersey Ave. N.W. Advance notice to attend the Futures Forum is requested by calling Ron Bergman in EPA’s Drinking Water Program at 202-260-6187. Reservations must be made for the dinner ($50 per person) by calling Charlene Shaw in EPA’s Drinking Water Program at 202-260-2285.
