EPA and Partners to Launch Gulf Awareness Patch Program for Girl Scouts in Mississippi

ATLANTA – On Saturday, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Gulf of Mexico Program Director Ben Scaggs will be at the University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Gulf Coast Research Laboratory to launch the Gulf Awareness Patch program for Mississippi Girl Scouts. Scaggs will be joined by Christopher Snyder, the laboratory’s Marine Education Center Director, and Lissa Frank, Girl Program Director for the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi.

The program is expected to attract upwards of 100 Brownies (2nd and 3rd grade Girl Scouts). They will take part in five activities designed to educate participants on the importance of conserving the Gulf. Participants will learn various water quality testing methods and learn how to use a seine net to collect organisms in the surf zone. There will be a lesson on climate change and how everyone can make a difference. Participants will receive a Gulf Awareness Patch upon completion of the event.
