EPA PROPOSES NEW HAZARDOUS WASTE SITES IN LIBBY, MONTANA,
AND OMAHA FOR SUPERFUND NATIONAL PRIORITIES LIST

Dave Ryan 202-564-7827 / ryan.dave@epa.gov

EPA is proposing two new hazardous waste sites for the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL), the Libby Asbestos site in Libby, Mont., and the Omaha Lead site in Omaha, Neb. The primary purpose of the NPL is to guide the EPA in determining which sites warrant further investigation. Generally, a site is proposed for the NPL if preliminary investigations indicate that it warrants further action. Proposed sites must go through a public comment period before they can be finalized on the NPL. The proposal appeared in the Feb. 26 Federal Register, with a 60-day public comment period. Including this action, there are now 74 proposed sites and 1,222 final sites on the NPL. There are a number of other sites currently under consideration for listing. As part of the new Superfund Pipeline Management Review, EPA will examine the NPL listing process to ensure that Superfund resources are being used at the worst sites that could not be cleaned up through other programs or by other means. For further technical information on these sites, contact Yolanda Singer of EPA’s Superfund program at 703-603-8835 (singer.yolanda@epa.gov), or visit: https://www.epa.gov/superfundhttps://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/siteclass/newnpl.htm
