US EPA announces WDI Superfund cleanup in Santa Fe Springs

LOS ANGELES - Officials with the US Environmental Protection Agency have begun  construction work at the Waste Disposal Inc. Superfund site in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., near Los Nietos Road and Santa Fe Springs Road.  

    For the next several months, work crews will be disposing of waste-filled drums and debris, working in and around nearby buildings, and installing the protective capping systems.  All possible measures are being taken to reduce noise, and increased traffic.

    The EPA's cleanup plan involves covering the buried waste and installing a liquid and gas collection system. The capping systems will isolate the waste and prevent the area groundwater from becoming contaminated.  The liquid and gas collection systems will ensure that chemical contamination cannot reach the soil, water and air of the surrounding community.  The agency began construction March 8.

    The WDI site is a 580 foot diameter concrete-lined reservoir which was used until the 1960s as a disposal area for petroleum wastes, construction debris and other materials.
