FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No. 08-OPA143

(Chicago, Ill. - Sept. 12, 2008) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has issued a Clean Air Act operating permit to Veolia Environmental Services for its hazardous waste combustion facility, 7 Mobile Ave., Sauget, Ill.

Normally, Clean Air Act operating permits are issued by states. In this case, EPA issued the permit because of a lawsuit by the Sierra Club and the American Bottom Conservancy.

Details of the history of this permitting action, resolution of legal action taken by these two groups and the final operating permit can be found in the docket for this action at http://www.regulations.gov: Docket ID No. EPA-R05-OAR-2008-0235.

EPA provided for a 40-day public comment period and held a public hearing July 8 at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville's East St. Louis Higher Education Campus in East St. Louis, Ill., to take comments on the draft operating permit. EPA received written and oral comments from several sources and considered all comments before issuing the final permit.
